Who Is This Course For?

  • Newly trained EMDR therapists who are curious about using EMDR with children and youth
  • EMDR therapists who are new working with children and youth
  • EMDR therapists who usually work with adults but want to transition into working with children and youth
  • Experienced child & youth EMDR therapists who want new activities and creative approaches to working with children and youth to integrate into what they are already doing

Course Focus:

This course has a practical focus at an introductory level. We won’t be going into great depth in any of the phases besides Phase 2: Preparation, even so this course is full of resources and wisdom. There will be enough focus on all phases to feel prepared to move forward working with children and youth.
The course focus is “Building Up from the Basics” meaning-know the framework and theoretical underpinnings of EMDR as a foundation to then build advanced skills from. Modifications in EMDR are necessary sometimes for special populations (Eg: children and youth), or for presenting clinical issues but therapists can sometimes veer too far from EMDR fidelity because of this. So, by having a strong foundational understanding of the standard protocol you will be more likely to practice with this in mind when working with children and youth.

Goals of Course:

  • For EMDR therapists to understand the 8-phases and 3-prong of EMDR with modifications at a basic level when working with children and youth and learn new strategies to work effectively with this population in the facilitation of the 8 phases and 3 prongs of EMDR.
  • For EMDR therapists to gain growing confidence in themselves and grounding in their skills and abilities in working with children and youth.
  • Help EMDR therapist to conceptualize and strategize how to choose and implement EMDR Phase 2: Preparation activities and tasks that align with their client’s treatment goals gleaned from Phase 1: History Taking & Case Planning.
  • For EMDR therapists to learn how to apply the Rallying Resources Wheel concepts to support Phase 2: Preparation. The wheel helps therapists strategically guide the child through Phase 2: Preparation facilitating therapeutic activities and focusing on tasks that address six key areas,
  • For EMDR therapists to develop an understanding of how to tailor treatment activities in all phases that support their client’s presenting issues
  • For EMDR therapists to gain a deeper understanding of the clinical research regarding bilateral stimulation (BLS) in relation to resourcing in Phase 2: Preparation, as well as how to introduce and explain BLS to children starting with its application in Phase 2: Preparation.

Goals of Course Lessons:

Many of the course lessons are derived from the “EMDR In-session” eBook collection created by Tara Marshall the course facilitator. Participants will leave with their own course-e-book packed full of lessons they can apply in their sessions.
  • Give practical and effective phase-based tools to integrate into EMDR therapy with children and youth
  • Help EMDR therapist to conceptualize phase-based activities that can be used to support their client’s treatment goals
  • Give EMDR therapists practical and effective tools to integrate into all phases of EMDR with children
  • Set the therapist and client up for therapeutic success
  • Further integrate the theoretical underpinnings of EMDR sticking to fidelity
  • Practice with purpose and be strategic
  • Share tools that can be a focal point for a session
  • Share activities that can build off one another
  • Give the therapist a chance to assess child’s self-regulation abilities
  • Provides you Phase 2: Preparation options beyond the basics like container & calm place
  • Start a customized workbook for your client and, track their progress
  • The “Therapist Guide” included with most activities from the EMDR In-session eBook collection gives clear activity instructions that benefits both the child and therapist and teaches you how to prepare for and facilitate the activity
Recommendation: Review EMDRIA’S definition of EMDR
  1. Before you start the course review EMDRIA’S definition of EMDR

  2. Review Francine Shapiros EMDR Basic Training book as the focus of this course assumes you have a foundational understanding of the framework of the standard EMDR protocol (even if you don’t have a lot of practice experience) and the theory that drives this unique and amazing psychotherapy Eg: AIP and trauma understanding, understanding of the 8 Phases and 3-prong approach etc.

Course Schedule and Timeline
